Hair oiling is one of the oldest habits in South Asian households — and one of the most misunderstood. Most people apply oil the wrong way, at the wrong time, or expect results far sooner than any natural product can deliver. Here is how to actually get value from a hair growth oil.
What hair oil can and cannot do
Let us be honest first. Hair oil is not a cure for hair loss caused by genetics, illness, hormonal issues or medication. If your hair is falling out in patches or shedding suddenly, that needs a doctor, not a bottle of oil.
What a good natural hair oil does well is support the conditions that healthy hair needs: a nourished scalp, less breakage along the shaft, better moisture retention and reduced dryness. Healthier strands break less — and less breakage is what most people are actually seeing when they say their hair "grew faster".
How to apply hair oil properly
- Section your hair. Part it into four sections so oil reaches your scalp, not just the top layer.
- Apply to the scalp first. Use your fingertips to place oil along the parting lines. The scalp is where it matters most.
- Massage for 5 minutes. Use fingertips in small circles — never your nails. Gentle pressure, no scrubbing.
- Work the rest through the lengths. Whatever is left on your hands goes on the mid-lengths and ends, which are the driest and most damaged parts.
- Leave it for 1–2 hours. Overnight is fine occasionally, but it is not necessary — and for oily scalps it can cause buildup.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using too much. A heavy, greasy application needs harsh shampooing to remove — which undoes the benefit. Two teaspoons is usually enough for medium-length hair.
- Aggressive rubbing. Vigorous scrubbing causes friction breakage, especially on wet or fragile hair.
- Tying hair tightly after oiling. Oiled hair is softer and more prone to stretching. Keep it loose.
- Oiling every single day. Two to three times a week is plenty for most hair types.
- Giving up after two weeks. The hair growth cycle is slow. Judge results at 8–12 weeks, not 14 days.
How often should you oil your hair?
It depends on your scalp:
- Dry scalp: two to three times a week
- Normal scalp: once or twice a week
- Oily scalp: once a week, focusing more on lengths than roots
Pair it with the basics
Oil works best alongside the fundamentals that people tend to skip: enough protein and iron in your diet, adequate water, decent sleep, and less heat styling. No topical product compensates for these.
